What is thyroid peroxidase?
Anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies are autoantibodies produced by the immune system which target thyroid peroxidase. Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In rare cases the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells. Disorders caused by this process are called autoimmune diseases. Thyroid peroxidase is an enzyme present in the thyroid which plays a role in producing thyroid hormones.
Its primary role is to facilitate production of the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which regulate metabolism throughout the body. The presence of anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies indicates a thyroid autoimmune condition such as Hashimoto's disease or Graves' disease.
