What is myoglobin?
Myoglobin is a protein found in muscle cells. It helps muscles to store oxygen and iron. Myoglobin is not typically present in the blood but might be released following damage to muscles.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of myoglobin in the blood and was previously used to investigate muscle injury. Creatine kinase (CK) blood tests are now preferred as they are more specific and sensitive.
