About Creatine kinase
What is creatine kinase?
Creatine kinase is a protein found in skeletal muscle, heart muscle and the brain. It is present in the blood at low levels but can increase as a result of muscle damage. High creatine kinase in the blood may occur after muscle trauma, rhabdomyolysis (severe, rapid breakdown of muscle) or muscular dystrophy (weakening and breakdown of muscle).
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of creatine kinase in the blood and can be used to diagnose and monitor muscle damage after trauma or in conditions such as rhabdomyolysis and muscular dystrophy.
