About Psa test

What is a PSA test?

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein secreted by the prostate in males. Its primary role is to liquefy semen and dissolve cervical mucus, enabling sperm to swim freely and access the uterus.

In healthy males, PSA is present in low concentrations in the blood. Elevated levels of PSA in the blood are used as a marker of prostate cancer, though they can also be elevated by other factors such as urinary tract infections or recent ejaculation.

Due to this fact, a PSA test produces a high level of false positives when used as a tool for diagnosis of prostate cancer, meaning it is used in conjunction with other tests.

Why take the test?

This test screens for elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the blood. It is typically used as a marker to aid in the diagnosis of prostate cancer.
