About Sodium

What is sodium?

Sodium is an essential dietary electrolyte present in all bodily fluids. Sodium is utilised for a wide range of bodily processes including nerve and muscle function. Sodium in the blood is restricted to a narrow range of concentrations in order to use it efficiently. Sodium levels are typically maintained by intake of water due to a stimulated thirst response and controlling excretion of sodium and water in the urine by the kidneys.

Elevated blood sodium levels (hypernatremia) can lead to symptoms including excess thirst, reduced urination, diarrhoea and vomiting. Sodium deficiency in the blood (hyponatremia) can lead to symptoms including weakness, fatigue, disorientation and muscle twitches.

Why take the test?

This test measures the amount of sodium in the blood. As the level of sodium in the blood is typically kept in a narrow range, abnormal levels can indicate a condition affecting sodium regulation such as kidney disease.
