About Renin
What is renin?
Renin or angiotensinogenase is an enzyme hormone secreted by the kidneys. Renin has a role in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), which regulates blood pressure through electrolyte levels in the blood and vassal constriction.
Due to the interlinked nature of renin and aldosterone in RAAS, the two are often tested together to diagnose elevated or low blood pressure. Conditions associated with abnormal renin levels include hyperaldosteronism, hypertension and hypoaldosteronism.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of renin in the blood. It is typically used in conjunction with an aldosterone test to diagnose abnormal blood pressure.
