About Phosphate (blood)
What is phosphate?
Phosphate is an ion made of the mineral phosphorus and oxygen. Phosphates are important for bones and teeth, muscle and nerve function and energy production.
Phosphates are consumed in foods such as nuts, beans and cereals and are absorbed or excreted by the body depending on requirements. Too little or too much phosphate is associated with health problems such as diabetes, kidney disease or hormone imbalances.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of phosphate in the blood and can be used to investigate conditions associated with abnormal phosphate.
