About Osmolality (blood)

What is an osmolality blood test?

Osmolality is a measure of the concentration of a substance that is dissolved in another. In the blood, osmolality is constantly adjusted, affecting processes such as how often you urinate.

The osmolality test is usually used to diagnose the amount of sodium in the blood. Low blood sodium (low osmolality) is referred to as hyponatremia, producing symptoms including headaches, nausea, vomiting, weakness and low energy, seizures and in extreme cases a coma.

Why take the test?

This test measures the osmolality of the blood serum. It is typically used to diagnose hyponatremia.
