What are bile acids?
Bile acids are synthesised by the liver and gut bacteria. They help with digestion of fats and oils and contribute to the regulation of a variety of metabolic processes. Altered bile acid level in the blood can be an early indicator of liver disease before other tests can detect it. Conditions associated with altered blood bile acid levels can include liver disease and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP).
