About Bile acids (total)
What are bile acids?
Bile acids are synthesised by the liver and gut bacteria. They help with digestion of fats and oils and contribute to the regulation of a variety of metabolic processes. Altered bile acid level in the blood can be an early indicator of liver disease before other tests can detect it. Conditions associated with altered blood bile acid levels can include liver disease and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP).
Why take the test?
This test measures the bile acid content of the blood. It is used as an early indicator of liver disease and ICP in pregnant women.
