About Aspartate aminotransferase

What is aspartate aminotransferase?

Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) is an enzyme produced mainly by the liver, heart and muscles. It is important for chemical reactions that occur in the body and can indicate the function of the body’s organs. AST is normally present at low levels in the blood. Levels may increase as a result of damage to the liver or muscles.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of AST in the blood and can be used to help diagnose liver damage such as cirrhosis and hepatitis.
