About Alkaline phosphatase

What is alkaline phosphatase?

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is an enzyme found throughout the body in tissues such as bones, intestines, bile ducts, the liver, and in the placenta of pregnant women. High ALP levels in your blood can be an indicator of conditions including liver diseases, bone diseases or block bile ducts. As there are multiple sources of ALP in the body, this test is often used in conjunction with liver tests to determine the general location of the problem.

Disorders associated with elevated ALP levels include hyperthyroidism, liver damage, rapid bone growth, osteomalacia, bone tumours and biliary obstructions.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of ALP in the blood. If your blood ALP level is elevated, your doctor may suggest an ALP isoenzyme test to determine the exact source of the problem.
