What is immunoglobulin E?
Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a type of antibody typically produced by the immune system to protect against pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and parasites. Some people have a hyperactive immune system, which produces IgE in response to benign airborne or contact allergens from other sources, such as pollen or pets. This process mistakes harmless molecules for pathogens, causing an allergic reaction. Allergies are thought to affect over 1 in 4 people in the UK at some point during their lifetime.
