What is urea?

Urea is a metabolic waste product excreted in the urine by the kidneys. Urea is used to transport nitrogen waste from proteins, which is produced as ammonia in the liver and combined with other elements such as oxygen, hydrogen and carbon to produce urea.

Urea is transported through the blood to the kidneys, where it is excreted and used to control the amount of water lost in the urine.

Abnormal blood urea levels can indicate conditions including kidney damage, liver damage, urinary tract obstructions and congestive heart failure.

Why take the test?

This test measures the concentration of urea in the blood. It is typically used to monitor kidney function and diagnose kidney damage. It can be used in conjunction with other tests to diagnose liver and heart conditions.

Take your test and post

Follow our simple instructions to take your sample and post back the enclosed prepaid envelope to our accredited lab for processing. We also offer home or workplace visits by a qualified nurse. For COVID-19 Fit to Fly tests you must attend one of our partner clinics for our trained collection officers to take your sample. You will then have the results emailed to you.
