About Protein (total)

What is the total protein test?

The total protein test measures the total amount of protein in the blood. The two major types of proteins are albumin and globulins. Albumin is the primary protein component of blood plasma. Made by the liver, it is responsible for keeping fluid in your bloodstream and transporting substances such as medicines, enzymes, hormones and vitamins around the body.

Albumin levels can be used to diagnose liver or kidney problems. Disorders associated with abnormal albumin levels include liver disease, kidney disease, malnutrition, malabsorption and dehydration. Globulins are immune proteins produced by the liver and immune system. There are four main types of globulin; alpha-1, alpha-2, beta and gamma (which includes antibodies).

They play a role in a variety of processes including blood clotting, liver function and immune response to pathogens. Globulin level changes are associated with infection, liver disease, kidney disease, autoimmune conditions, nutritional deficiencies and cancers.

Why take the test?

This test measures the total protein concentration in the blood. It is typically used to investigate liver or kidney disease.
