About Antisperm antibodies
What are antisperm antibodies?
Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. Antisperm antibodies are antibodies which specifically target and attack sperm cells causing symptoms from reduced motility to preventing the fertilisation of eggs. Sperm cells are normally protected from the immune system preventing production of these antibodies. If antisperm antibodies are found in male blood it means the protective blood-testis barrier has been broken.
The presence of antisperm antibodies can cause infertility or reduced fertility.
Why take the test?
This test checks for the presence of antisperm antibodies in the blood and is used to diagnose unexplained infertility.
