What is the antiphospholipid syndrome screen?

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune condition in which antiphospholipid antibodies are produced and bind to phospholipids, increasing the likelihood of a blood clot. Symptoms of APS are similar to those of multiple sclerosis.

Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In rare cases the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells. Disorders caused by this process are called autoimmune diseases.

The presence of antiphospholipid antibodies results in the autoimmune condition APS, also known as Hughes syndrome.
