What is the Antenatal Profile blood test?
Blood tests are routine throughout pregnancy to check the mother and baby are healthy. Antenatal profile tests can help to detect common conditions during pregnancy such as anaemia.
Anaemia develops when the body doesn’t produce enough red blood cells (RBCs) to keep up with the body’s demands for oxygen. Anaemia can cause symptoms including fatigue, weakness and pale skin. During pregnancy, the volume of blood the mother must produce increases, thus requiring sufficient iron, B12 and folate for RBC production.
Early detection of such conditions will enable the mother to receive the best treatment for themselves and their baby.
