What is a glucose tolerance test?
A glucose tolerance test consists of administration of glucose followed by several tests to monitor how quickly the body can process and remove it from the bloodstream. After fasting for a period of 8-10 hours, a glucose drink is consumed, followed by urine and blood samples every 30 minutes for 2 hours.
The glucose tolerance test can give insight into a variety of factors including the proper function of the pancreas, gestational diabetes during pregnancy, diabetes and insulin resistance.
Why take the test?
This test measures the body’s response to glucose. It is typically used to test for diabetes and insulin resistance but can also be used to monitor insulin production in those with diabetes.
