About Glucose tolerance and insulin test
What is a glucose tolerance and insulin test?
A glucose tolerance test consists of administration of glucose followed by several tests to monitor how quickly the body can process and remove it from the bloodstream. After fasting for a period of 8-10 hours, a glucose drink is consumed, followed by urine and blood samples every hour for 2 hours.
These samples are tested for glucose and insulin levels to monitor the body’s response to glucose. The glucose tolerance and insulin test can give insight into a variety of factors including the proper function of the pancreas, gestational diabetes during pregnancy, diabetes and insulin resistance.
Why take the test?
This test measures the body’s response to glucose for a 2 hour period. It is typically used to test for diabetes and insulin resistance.
