About Coeliac check
What is coeliac disease?
Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In some cases, the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells. Disorders caused by this process are called autoimmune diseases.
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition triggered by exposure to gluten, affecting approximately 1% of the population. In this disease, exposure to gluten triggers the immune system to produce autoantibodies which can target a number of different organs in the body.
Symptoms of coeliac disease include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloating, indigestion, skin rashes, and fatigue after eating gluten.
Why take the test?
This test screens for the most common autoantibody associated with coeliac disease. It is used to diagnose coeliac disease, which is different to gluten intolerance.
