What is thalassaemia?
Thalassaemia is a blood disorder that causes low haemoglobin levels. Haemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells (RBCs) responsible for transporting oxygen. It is important to have the right amount of haemoglobin and RBCs to supply the body with enough oxygen.
Lower levels of haemoglobin in thalassaemia results in fewer RBCs leading to anaemia. Thalassaemia is an inherited condition that typically affects people of Mediterranean, South Asian, Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern origin. There are two main types of thalassaemia: type alpha and type beta.
Beta thalassaemia causes worse symptoms. Symptoms of thalassaemia include fatigue, shortness of breath and pale skin as a result of anaemia, as well as slow growth and dark urine.
