About Sickle cell disease

What is Sickle cell disease?

Sickle cell disease is a blood disorder caused by abnormal haemoglobin. Haemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells (RBCs) responsible for transporting oxygen.  It is important to have the right amount of haemoglobin and RBCs to supply the body with enough oxygen. Abnormal haemoglobin in sickle cell disease changes the shape of RBCs which can result in blockage of blood vessels. Symptoms of sickle cell disease include anaemia, fatigue, jaundice, painful episodes and an increased risk of infection.

Why take the test?

This test checks the type of haemoglobins present in the blood and can be used to detect sickle cell disease.
