About Folate (serum)

What is folate?

Folate is a B vitamin (B9) important for red blood cell (RBC) production and DNA synthesis and repair. It is found in food such as green leafy vegetables and beans. A deficiency in folate can lead to anaemia. Anaemia is a common blood condition characterised by low levels of red blood cells (RBCs) or haemoglobin. Haemoglobin is an important component of RBCs responsible for transporting oxygen.

It is important to have the right amount of haemoglobin and RBCs, as well as vitamins and iron required for RBC production, to supply the body with enough oxygen. Anaemia can cause symptoms including fatigue, weakness and pale skin. Anaemia may develop as a result of a folate deficiency in your diet, a genetic condition or a condition such as Crohn’s disease which affects absorption of nutrients.

Why take this test?

This test measures the level of folate in the blood and can be used to determine the type of anaemia.
