About Ferritin

What is ferritin?

Ferritin is a protein that stores iron and is an important component of the oxygen-carrying red blood cells (RBCs). Ferritin is found mainly in the liver, bone marrow, spleen, muscles and circulates in the blood. The level of ferritin in the blood is directly proportional to the body’s iron stores. Low levels of ferritin may indicate iron-deficiency anaemia.

Anaemia is a common blood condition characterised by low levels of red blood cells (RBCs) or haemoglobin. Haemoglobin is an important component of RBCs responsible for transporting oxygen.

It is important to have the right amount of haemoglobin and RBCs to supply the body with enough oxygen. Anaemia can cause symptoms including fatigue, weakness and pale skin. Anaemia may develop as a result of a deficiency in your diet, from conditions affecting the health of your RBCs or from significant blood loss.
