About Vitamin b6 (pyridoxine)
What is vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)?
Vitamin B6 or pyridoxine is an essential vitamin for the breakdown and storage of proteins and for haemoglobin production. Vitamin B6 is found in high levels in pork, fish, chicken, whole grains, legumes and peanuts. Vitamin B6 is usually caused by an underlying condition or activity rather than a lack of dietary intake. These may include chronic alcoholism, malabsorption and smoking. A deficiency can cause anaemia, seizures and decreased immunity. A deficiency, as well as toxicity, can cause peripheral neuropathy.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of vitamin B6 in the blood and can be used to detect a deficiency or toxicity.
