About Vitamin b1 (thiamine)
What is vitamin B1 (also known as thiamine)?
Vitamin B1 is a coenzyme important for breaking down and using energy from food. Vitamin B1 also contributes to the function of the nervous system, muscles and heart. Food high in B1 include cereals and whole grains, beef and pork, pork, nuts, pulses and peas. A vitamin B1 deficiency may lead to beriberi. Wet beriberi is a more severe form that affects the heart, whereas dry beriberi may result in nerve damage.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of vitamin B1 and can be used to detect a vitamin B1 deficiency.
