About Iron deficiency check

What is an iron deficiency check?

Iron is an important component of haemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells (RBCs) that carries oxygen in the blood. It is important to have the right amount of haemoglobin and RBCs, as well as iron and vitamins for RBC production and to supply the body with enough oxygen. Iron is stored and transported by the proteins ferritin and transferrin. The total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) is the amount of free transferrin which can transport iron in the blood. The levels of ferritin, transferrin and the TIBC are indicators of the body’s iron stores.

Low levels of iron, ferritin or transferrin saturation may contribute to an iron deficiency. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anaemia, a common blood condition characterised by low levels of red blood cells (RBCs) or haemoglobin. Anaemia may develop as a result of a deficiency in your diet, from conditions affecting the health of your RBCs or from significant blood loss. Symptoms of an iron deficiency include fatigue, weakness and pale skin.

Why take this test?

This test measures the levels of iron and proteins that store and transport iron. This test is particularly helpful for pregnant women or those who may have insufficient amounts of iron in their diet.
