About Allergy screen (inhalants)
What is the Allergy Screen (Inhalants)
Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a type of antibody typically produced by the immune system to protect against pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and parasites. Some people have a hyperactive immune system, which produces IgE in response to benign airborne or contact allergens from other sources, such as pollen or pets. This process mistakes harmless molecules for pathogens, causing an allergic reaction. Allergies are thought to affect over 1 in 4 people in the UK at some point during their lifetime.
Why take the test?
This test is used to identify potential skin and respiratory allergies. It measures the levels of IgE in the blood, along with screening for reactions to a variety of single allergens commonly associated with skin and respiratory problems. The test will detect allergies such as those to pollen, dogs and cats.
