About Melatonin (urine)
What is melatonin?
Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain. Melatonin helps to regulate the sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm) and is produced in greater amounts in the dark, ie the night. It also influences seasonal rhythms as higher amounts are produced in the autumn, as well as body temperature, cardiovascular function and immune function. Low levels of melatonin are associated with sleep disorders, seasonal affectiveness disorder (SAD), depression and fatigue.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of melatonin in the urine and can be used to assess melatonin production particularly in relation to sleep disorders and SAD.
