What is 11-deoxycortisol?

11-Deoxycortisol (also known as cortodoxone or cortexolone) is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It is an important precursor for glucocorticoids, such as cortisol, which are involved in the stress response, metabolism and immune function.

Hormones are chemical messengers used by the body to respond to internal and external influences. The activity of hormones must be finely regulated to produce the desired physiological effect. This regulation is typically coordinated by complex interactions between several different hormones. Both excessive production and a deficiency in the production of steroid hormones can cause ill health.

Excess levels of glucocorticoids may cause immunosuppression, whereas low levels may cause the release of inflammatory molecules.

Disorders related to glucocorticoids include Addison’s disease and Cushing’s disease.
