What is 11-deoxycorticosterone?
11-Deoxycorticosterone (also known as desoxycorticosterone or 21-hydroxyprogesterone) is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It is an important precursor for mineralocorticoids, such as aldosterone, which regulate the balance of water and minerals in the body.
Hormones are chemical messengers used by the body to respond to internal and external influences. The activity of hormones must be finely regulated to produce the desired physiological effect. This regulation is typically coordinated by complex interactions between several different hormones. Both excessive production and a deficiency in the production of steroid hormones can cause ill health.
Excess levels of mineralocorticoids may cause sodium retention, swelling, and high blood pressure, whereas low levels may result in low blood pressure and high potassium.
Disorders related to mineralocorticoids include hyperaldosteronism, hypoaldosteronism and 11-hydroxylase deficiency.
