What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a bone disease resulting from losing too much or not producing enough bone to maintain a healthy bone density. The result of this bone loss is that bones are weaker, meaning individuals are more at risk of fractures. In elderly sufferers, breaks in the spine can develop over time leading to a bent forward, stooped posture.

Before osteoporosis has fully developed, slightly reduced bone density is called osteopenia. Many factors can affect bone density including alcohol intake, age and hormone balance.

Post-menopausal females are most at risk of developing osteoporosis, as bone density falls with oestrogen levels. Both osteoporosis and osteopenia can be treated with bone-strengthening treatments.
