About Bnp
What is B-type natriuretic peptide?
B-Type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a hormone produced by the heart. The heart releases more BNP when the heart tissue is stretched. This is common in heart failure when the heart has to work harder.
Symptoms of heart failure include shortness of breath. Although the level of BNP is not directly correlated with symptom severity, a higher BNP level than normal is indicative of heart failure.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of BNP in the blood and can be used to help diagnose heart failure.
